Solmarie
2017
Lymarie (Lily) Deida was planning for her family’s future when her husband, Alex Carrillo, was picked up by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers outside of a Burlington, Vt courthouse. Although both she and her daughter, Solmarie, 4, are citizens of the United States, their family now contends with the financial burdens and realities of life within the American immigration system. After eight weeks of detention, Alex has been granted a voluntary deportation to Mexico, where he holds citizenship, and must remain there until his marriage visa is approved - a process which could take months or years. As the family fights to stay together, they must learn to cope with the uncertainties built into helping Alex become an American.
